The Great Big Idea

TheFirstYear.org is a blended learning project initiated by the Center for Innovation in Legal Education at the S.J. Quinney College of Law. We aim to develop high-quality learning modules and assessments that can be used by any law professor wishing to blend their classroom. They are made carefully, taking into account novice learners and multimedia learning, resulting in an effective and useful learning tool for study or review.

TheFirstYear is developed by the Center for Innovation in Legal Education at the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah.

Why should we blend the legal classroom?

Why do we even want to flip or blend the legal classroom? This video can help explain some of the fundamental reasons we'd want to flip a class. Cognitive psychology research can tell us a lot about how people best learn. We're looking to leverage this research in the development of TheFirstYear.

Formative Assessments

Each of our learning modules contains an assessment. Students will gain insight into their progress throughout the semester, rather than after the final. These assessments are measured for effectiveness and will truly measure a student's comprehension of the topic.

Talk With Your Peers

Sometimes, the best insight on a difficult topic can be from one of your peers. TheFirstYear.org allows conversation to flow, allowing students to gather explanations from their peers. Additionally, students can up-vote common questions, allowing the professor to address the more difficult questions in class.
